GIP Lab Computing & Communication
The GIP Lab employs state-of-the-art computing and communications technology to perform research, to design and implement the information infrastructure necessary for database management, and to disseminate data and information. Networked facilities on the main campus of the University of South Carolina and the Baruch Marine Field Laboratory in Georgetown, SC, provide researchers and students with access to a comprehensive selection of GIS, digital image processing, database management, environmental modeling, and statistical analysis software. Internet connectivity and videoconferencing capabilities facilitate interaction between researchers on campus and at the field laboratory as well as with those working at other locations. Hardware platforms include Unix workstations, Microsoft servers and workstations, Pentium PC's, and Macintoshes. Data loggers, high-precision GPS units, GPS/depth sounders, survey levels, YSI's, a spectroradiometer, and a canopy analyzer ceptometer enhance field data collection procedures. Additional equipment includes a digitizing workstation and high-resolution color scanners for database development, and large-format color plotters and printers. |
